Install Your Own Nextcloud with Docker Compose on Ubuntu 24.04
Create your own GDPR-compliant cloud for files, calendars and contacts on a powerful KVM server.
Recommended plan: For snappy Nextcloud performance, we recommend at least the Value M plan (4 vCores, 8 GB RAM, 160 GB NVMe in our Frankfurt am Main location).
1. Requirements
Make sure Docker and Docker Compose are installed on your KVM server (see our Docker tutorial).
2. Create the directory & Compose file
Create a new directory for Nextcloud:
mkdir -p ~/nextcloud && cd ~/nextcloudCreate a docker-compose.yml file with the following content:
services:
db:
image: mariadb:10.11
restart: always
command: --transaction-isolation=READ-COMMITTED --log-bin-trust-function-creators=1
networks:
- nextcloud
volumes:
- db_data:/var/lib/mysql
environment:
MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD: DeinSicheresPasswort
MYSQL_PASSWORD: NextcloudPasswort
MYSQL_DATABASE: nextcloud
MYSQL_USER: nextcloud
app:
image: nextcloud:latest
restart: always
ports:
- 8080:80
depends_on:
- db
networks:
- nextcloud
volumes:
- nextcloud_data:/var/www/html
environment:
MYSQL_PASSWORD: NextcloudPasswort
MYSQL_DATABASE: nextcloud
MYSQL_USER: nextcloud
MYSQL_HOST: db
networks:
nextcloud:
volumes:
db_data:
nextcloud_data:Both containers share the nextcloud network, so Nextcloud reaches the database simply via the service name db (MYSQL_HOST: db). Replace both passwords; MYSQL_PASSWORD must be identical in both services.
3. Start the Nextcloud containers
Start the Nextcloud stack in the background:
docker compose up -dAfter a few seconds, you can open your Nextcloud in the browser at http://YOUR-SERVER-IP:8080 and complete the initial setup.
